When tennis players think about their equipment, most of the attention tends to go to the racquet. But the strings are the part that actually makes contact with the ball, and they have a major influence on how a racquet feels and performs.

Through many years of playing, coaching and restringing racquets, I have seen the difference that timely restringing can make.

Tennis strings do not need to break before they need replacing. From the moment a racquet is restrung, the strings gradually begin to lose tension. As they age, they can also lose elasticity and become less responsive.

Because this change happens slowly, many players adjust without realising how much performance they have lost.

The racquet may begin to feel dull or “dead”. You might notice less control, reduced spin or find yourself swinging harder to generate depth. The strings may move around more than usual or show visible fraying and notching.

One of the most common things I have observed is a player becoming frustrated with their timing or consistency when the real issue is that their strings are well past their best.

How often you should restring depends on how frequently you play, your playing style, how hard you hit, the type of string you use and whether you compete.

The most important thing is to pay attention to how the racquet feels rather than waiting for the strings to snap.

Fresh strings will not fix technical problems, but they can help your racquet perform more consistently. When you know how your racquet will respond, you can swing confidently and focus on your game.

If your racquet feels different, your strings are visibly worn or you cannot remember the last time it was restrung, it is probably time to have it checked.

The most expensive tennis string is not necessarily the best one for you.

Through many years of playing, coaching and restringing racquets, I have learned that a good string setup needs to suit the individual player. Their age, ability, playing style, racquet and physical needs should all be considered.

Not every player needs a stiff performance polyester string.

For many recreational players, juniors and those wanting greater comfort, a quality multifilament or synthetic string may be a better choice. These strings can provide a softer feel, easier power and greater comfort.

Polyester strings can offer excellent control, spin and durability for players with the technique and racquet-head speed to benefit from them. However, polyester strings can lose their playing qualities before they break. They may also feel harsh if they are used for too long or strung too tightly.

Tension is just as important as the type of string.

Lower tensions can generally provide greater comfort, depth and easier access to power. Higher tensions can create a firmer response and greater perceived control. However, simply increasing the tension is not always the answer when a player is hitting the ball long.

A good restring should consider the complete setup, including the player, racquet, string and tension. Even a small adjustment can make a meaningful difference to comfort, control and confidence.
